Pre-requisites:

If you have a CCNA and you have passed the SND exam you are got to go. If not you will need to clear the CCNA Security to satisfy the prerequisites.

Exams:

In addition to the pre-requisites you have to pass three required exams and choose one more from the elective exams. Any exam from the electives will satisfy the Certification requirements.

So lets see what you would need to pass these exams. I will also include the study materials that i will be using for each exam.

1) 642-504 SNRS Securing Networks with Cisco Routers and Switches (SNRS)

As the name suggests, securing networks with routers and switches. Expect to use a lot of CLI for this exam. You will be required to configure VPNs, IOS-IPS, layer-2 security and CBAC.

I think this is one of the hardest one in all the CCSP exams. Lots and lots of CLI configurations that surely will give you nightmares.

2.) 642-524 SNAF Securing Networks with ASA Foundation (SNAF)

This is like SNRS but all GUI based. Yup the foundation and the concepts are the same. But instead of using the CLI to perform the security functions you will be required to use a security appliance. You will be using ASDM to do most of the configurations, don’t get me wrong you will still be required to do CLI based configurations. You will be using ASDM to configure VPNs, AAA, L3/L4 protocol inspections and firewalls.

This just like SDM, you can either run ASDM on a pc or install it on the ASA device.

3) 642-533 IPS Implementing Cisco Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)

You will be required to deploy, configure, and administer Cisco IPS sensors to protect network devices as well as efficiently manage IPS alarms. This exam is all about IPS. So you have to dig deep and get into the core of Cisco IPS.

Once again you will be required to know how to configure IPS using CLI. There are other appliances also that you will need to use including Cisco IDM and IEV.

4) Elective Exams (Choose One)

a) 642-591 CANAC Implementing Cisco NAC Appliance (CANAC)

So what is NAC?
The NAC Appliance (Cisco Clean Access) is a “shrink-wrapped” network admission control solution that recognizes users, their devices and roles; evaluates the security posture of the endpoint and scans for vulnerabilities; and enforces policy in the network. In particular, prior to allowing users onto the network, the NAC Appliance (Cisco Clean Access) solution allows administrators to authenticate, authorize, interrogate and remediate users and their machines enforcing policy based access control on the network.

b.) 642-545 MARS Implementing Cisco Security Monitoring, Analysis and Response System (MARS)

One more security appliance to know off. Once again GUI based and a lot of configuration involved including installing and maintenance along with event and traffic inspections.

c) 642-515 SNAA Securing Networks with ASA Advanced (SNAA)

As the name suggests it is basically SNAF on steroids. You will be required to configure advance features on ASA, including configuring the ASA 5505 dual-ISP support, configuring ASA 5505 VLANs, configuring policy NAT, installing and configuring the Cisco Secure Desktop, configuring the security appliance to pass multicast traffic, configuring Layer 7 class maps and policy maps, and initializing the AIP-SSM and CSC-SSM.

Note: For a complete list of exam objective please visit the cisco’s website.

Certification Notes: (things you will need)

i) If you are using GNS3, make sure you are using IOSs with version 12.4(6)T and newer.

CompTIA Server+ certification validates candidates’ knowledge and skills in disaster recovery and RAID, SCSI and multiple CPUs field. There is no prerequisite for the certification; however, it’s recommended that candidates hold a CompTIA A+ certification. The certification requests two exams: SK0-002 and JK0-009 (E2C Exam).

SK0-002 and JK0-009 are two 90 minutes exams which contains 80 questions. The passing score is 615 on a scale of 100-900. The languages available for the exams are English and Japanese. The price for CompTIA Server+ exams is $239.

test4site provides SK0-009 study guide to candidates’ exam preparation. The material is a collection of total 500 questions and answers which cover every topics required for the exam.

CompTIA Linux+ certification validates candidates’ capability in managing Linux system from the command line, user administration, file permissions, software configuration and Linux-based clients. The certification is recommended for Hitachi Electronics and Fujitsu Japan employees. The certification requires XK0-002 exam.

XK0-002 is a one hour and a half exam which contains 98 questions. The passing score is 675 on a scale of 100-900. The languages available for the exams are English and Japanese. There is no formal prerequisite for the certification; however, CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+ certification or equivalent knowledge are recommended for the certification pursuing.

Another thread made me think of general certification test-taking advice, so I thought I’d start one.

With the exception of the CCIE written, Cisco tests are approximately 60 questions in 90 minutes.

This means you have about 1:30 to answer each question. Questions such as simulations, simlets, and those ’4-part’ questions count as a single question, but are obviously going to take longer. So budget accordingly.

I tend to check my progress at 30 minute intervals. At 30 minutes, I should be at about 20 questions, at 60 minutes, I should be at about 40 questions. You kind of have to weigh this against how many simulations/multipart questions you’ve seen. They’re presented in random order, so you could get all the multiparts at the end.

If you can get into the habit (I can’t), you should read the answers from the bottom up. Cisco likes to throw some “almost right” answers toward the top, and some “exactly right” answers toward the bottom. If you read top down, this can slow you down.

Also, in case you haven’t heard it, during the initial survey you have about 15 minutes of test time when you’re allowed to be writing on your erasable board. For the CCNA tests, this is a good time to make a subnetting chart. This will save you time and increase your accuracy on a number of questions. There are a number of websites that will teach you how to make the chart… Find one that you understand. This doesn’t seem necessary for the CCNP tests. It’s also a good time to write down anything you have trouble remembering: acronyms, lsa types, default values, etc. You’re more likely to remember them when you’re not “on the spot” in a particular question.

Any other general or cisco-specific test taking advice?

Study and get a good nights rest. I had no sleep when I took my ICND1 and it was the most difficult test ever, but I had like 6 hours of sleep before taking my ICND 2 and I breezed through it.

What I also do is make a 1-2 page study sheet, which includes everything and I just read it 4-5 times before taking the test, and I am usually really fresh before the test.

Mine may differ from some of yours -

I like to go over all the key topics in the book the day before and the day of. A good nights rest is always good.

Where I probably differ from you guys – I usually try to take my tests around 10AM – 12PM. I skip breakfast and fast. This may seem hokey to some – but I feel that fasting and being especially prayerful on test day is always a good idea – no matter your religion.

Also – confidence. If you go in having no confidence in your skills – you will fail. Don’t doubt your instincts.

I’ve only sat the ICND1 and ICND2 up to now so I’ll target this at the CCNA.

Before taking the CCNA (or any exam really) you need to walking into that test room thinking you have already passed.

Be confident in all topics and you will fly through the multiple choice questions, leaving your self a bit more time to work through the simulations.

I found when taking the CCNA i was able to look at a topology design and notice within seconds if two interfaces, for example on point-to-point links are not in the same subnet. My point is, if you can look at subnets and reverse engineer them quickly in your head this will help a lot. Practice and practice subnetting and you will find you’re self knowing the patterns, block boundaries, answering subnet related questions in seconds. You don’t want to be writing out binary (from my experiences) to find out if two serial interfaces are in the same subnet or not.

I like to use a Boson ExamSim product to test my knowledge on the concepts, I find it helps me learn. The Boson ExamSim for the ICND1 has loads of subnetting questions too expecting you to reverse engineer up to 8 subnets for one question.

If you have a lab, build topologies including layer 2 and layer 3 protocols, run debug commands, practice with ACLs and NAT. Delete the startup-configs and rebuild.

Like I said earlier and bsdrocker stated above you need to be feeling confident with the exam criteria before taking the test.

You could take my advice with a pinch of salt after my recent bsci failure

So i’ll also target this at CCNA

A good nights sleep is important. Easy to say because it can be bloody hard to sleep with the worry of the exam the next day but try your best. Don’t resort to sleeping pills or anything, just wear yourself down by going to the gym or some physical activity. You’ll sleep like a baby

Personally I would rather do my exam at the start of the day (9am) because my brain is fresh. I’m a morning person, I got another BSCI exam comming so i’ve been getting up at 6am sitting in front of the fire reading my self study guide (geeeeeek!!)

Someone once told me its bad to cram your brain with revision hours before the test because your short term memory overload will hamper your ability to recall information from your long term memory repository.

My NUMBER1 tip is when you are sitting the exam and you face a tough question early on, don’t let it throw you off! Press on, you may be weak on that particular subject but press on and the more familiar stuff will come.

After reading responses, a few things to add:

Early in the morning is probably a better time to take a test. Eat a small breakfast, do a short review, and then go. Fasting isn’t wise for most people (though it may work for some), nor is taking it in the afternoon after reviewing all day (again, may work for some, but for the average person, it’s best to have nutrition and rest).

Something that’s hard for me is to identify the questions that I don’t know. If you’re sitting there looking at a ‘pick 2′, and 3 of the answers sound right, it’s probably not worth your time to try and reason it out or try to dig deep and recall the answer. Pick your two answers and move on. I know I’ve spent a couple minutes on certain questions, only to discover that I was no closer to the correct answer than I was 30-seconds into the question, and I would have been better off using that time on a question that I could figure out.

When you issue the show interface command it shows an output and input queue.

My question is, what exactly is represented by output and input.

For example, when it says output, does that include packets sent out of the physical interface and packets sent from one interface to an other interface on the router?

On the input queue, is that packets coming into the physical interface and packets coming into the interface from other interfaces on the router/switch?

If the above is true, consider the following example.

A packet comes in on interface fa0/1, then goes out interface fa0/3. Does this mean that the packet will hit two queues on interface fa0/3, an input (moving from fa0/1 to fa0/3) and an output (moving from fa0/3 out the wire)?

When you apply QoS, does this take over the input queue?

A:
Picture yourself as a little man sitting inside the router. Packets that are ‘output’ are packets you send somewhere else. Packets that are input are ones that come to you. So if a packet comes in fa0/0, that’s shows up as statistics in the input queue. You look at that packet, and decide it needs to go out fa0/1, it becomes an output packet. You have to be centered in the router.
Quote:
On the input queue, is that packets coming into the physical interface and packets coming into the interface from other interfaces on the router/switch?

Same confusion. You’re giving too much power to the interfaces. The interfaces either send packets out along the wires (output) or receive packets from the wire (input).

The interface would never output packets to another interface in the same router. It’s not output at that point, it’s processing.
Quote:
A packet comes in on interface fa0/1,

This is the input queue. It does very little, except buffer the packet until the processor or ASICs have time to process it.
Quote:
then goes out interface fa0/3.

It gets assigned to the output queue of interface fa0/3.
Quote:
Does this mean that the packet will hit two queues on interface fa0/3, an input (moving from fa0/1 to fa0/3)

No such queue exists. It transits immediately from the input queue of fa0/1 to the output queue of fa0/3. You’re adding a step that doesn’t need to happen.
Quote:
and an output (moving from fa0/3 out the wire)?

The output queue consists of packets that are waiting for time on the wire. Once it hits the wire, it’s no longer in a queue, it’s sending.
Quote:
When you apply QoS, does this take over the input queue?

QoS only applies on the output queue. It reorders packets waiting for time on the wire so that high priority packets are sent first. You can’t do this on input because the processor hasn’t seen them yet. So QoS manages the output queue.

Barring extremely bad circumstances, the packets can traverse from an input queue to an output queue very quickly. There is rarely congestion inside the switch/router, at least when compared to congestion on the output interfaces.
